![]() I understand the concern and panic that you must have been feeling but please consult and listen to trained, on duty medical professionals. But people don't know that one and thus don't panic over it. Now if the cookie had a handful of raisins in it this is suddenly a much bigger problem as grapes and raisins cause renal failure in dogs and it takes considerably fewer raisins to kill a dog than chocolate chips. Vets spend a lot of time fielding questions from panicked people who think their dog is dying because it ate a cookie with chocolate chips and ensuring pet owners that there is not enough theobromine in said cookie to cause problems. This is probably part of why your wife's friends suggested relaxing. The hydrogen peroxide method is seriously dangerous and can cause your dog to aspirate which is considerably worse than any effect the small amount of hops may have had. If something like this happens again please take your dog to an emergency hospital and have a trained veterinarian induce vomiting. This was taken during hunting season, hence the blaze.įirstly, I'm really glad your dog is okay and I'm happy she is so well loved. The goofy lovable guy on the left is Koopa Troopa. Sorry guys, here's a picture - cute blonde is Penny, she ate the hops. We all have a responsibility to ensure that our hobby doesn't harm our four-legged apprentices. And especially don't talk yourself out of it. Don't let anyone talk you out of treating your dog for it, even if they are vets who think you're a crazy alarmist. It's really just a rant that I'm shooting out there, but it's tied to a PSA about not letting your dogs eat hops so I guess it's ok. It sucked that I had to put her through that, but it would have sucked even more if she died and I could have prevented it. It's probably true, but the data is not conclusive so it is a recommended practice to treat for the worst case scenario.Īnyway, I administered the peroxide and made my apprentice vomit outside. Them telling me that it's all ok is like telling a woman who has a glass of wine a week while she's pregnant that her kid will be 100% ok. But, if my wife came home and the dog was dead I would be blamed 100%. ![]() It was really frustrating, it sounded like they thought I was crazy. So I went back and forth with my wife and her vet friends who kept reassuring me that everything was ok. ![]() But I couldn't just let it go, I had to do my due diligence. I have vets telling me this is ok, and even the Beersmith article telling me that they are probably not lethal in most cases. She told me where it was and added that her labmates, who are all veterinarians and vet students said "not to worry about it". I also know that the data isn't really conclusive on which breeds are susceptible (my brewing apprentice is a miniature American shepherd), but in my mind that wasn't an excuse for inaction.ĭidn't know where the hydrogen peroxide was so I texted my wife asking where it was. I've known hops were lethal to dogs for quite a while, and I just reread the Beersmith blog article reiterating that earlier this week. At some point I dropped a few hop pellets and my dog scarfed them up before I could react. ![]() thankfully she was ok, and I'd like to think it was because I took action.īrewed a "new-dad-who-has-no-time-on-the-weekends-so-he-brews-on-a-Thursday" beer while the wife was at an event with her labmates. ![]()
